Although there are many causes of heel pain, the most common is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Pain occurs when the ligament (plantar fascia) becomes inflamed at its insertion on the heel bone and may be associated with a bone spur. This inflammation occurs most commonly due to abnormal foot alignment. Treatments include stretching, anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, physical therapy, strapping, orthotics and in rare instances, surgery.
