The term "hammertoe" includes several deformities that result in a cocked up, buckled or contracted toe. When the toe is in this position it is more likely to become irritated from shoes. Hammertoes occur most commonly due to poor foot mechanics. Treatments include padding, splints and orthotics. Once the toe becomes rigidly contracted, surgery is often necessary to solve the problem.
