| The
acronym P.R.I.C.E. addresses the initial treatment for acute sprains:
Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. What may seem like "just
a sprain" can have significant long-term
repercussions. The potential for chronic instability and ankle arthritis
may necessitate a cast in severe sprains. There is also a risk of fractures
even with minor trauma. Being able to move the part is not a reliable
sign that a fracture did not occur. Any black or blue discoloration,
severe swelling or pain that persists for more than a few days should
be evaluated by a physician. |
