A bunion is a bony prominence at the base of the great toe. It occurs when the great toe drifts toward the second toe and creates a progressive "buckling" and malalignment of the great toe joint. As with many foot problems, faulty inherited foot architecture is the underlying cause, although poor fitting shoes can make it worse. In the early stage, treatment includes padding, wider shoes and orthotics. As the deformity progresses, surgery is often necessary to prevent arthritic changes.
